18. Midwife & Sage Femme: With Women (Womban Herstory) with Debra Grant

Episode Summary

Maya, Paula, and Debra gather together to dive into holding sacred space for the womban through birthing and expansion of the family unit.

Episode Notes

Debra Grant has been working in the field of midwifery: “with woman” since 1978, when a friend of hers asked her to deliver her baby because she didn’t want to go to the hospital. From that moment on, more friends asked her to help deliver their babies at home, and Debra’s true calling emerged.

She decided to “get educated” in pregnancy, labor, and birth. She did self-study, attended nursing school, and then worked in labor and delivery at a hospital. This fully rooted her decision to do a home birth practice.  She graduated from Seattle Midwifery School in 1988 as a Licensed Midwife. She has delivered over 1,000 babies, in the US, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Bali, and Kenya, Africa. She was on the faculty at Seattle Midwifery School for years, trained over 30 midwives, and was one of the first to assist at water births in Washington. Her philosophy and belief is hands off management as long as the baby and mother are fine”. Currently , Debra works as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner in private practice in Yelm, Washington. She continues her “with woman” philosophy of care (and occasionally comes out of midwifery retirement to have the honor of delivering a baby).
